ACTIONS YOU
WILL NEED TO TAKE IN THE EVENT OF A DEATH Members of the Burial Committee of the PJCEA are available to help you with the
decisions to be taken, and the procedures which have to be completed following a
bereavement. They can help as much or as little as you like in making the necessary
arrangements and will help ensure that nothing important is overlooked. Please feel free
to contact any member of the group.
There are some legal procedures, which must be followed in
the event of a death:
| 1 |
You must obtain a death
certificate. If the death was in hospital then the bereavement office will be able to help
you; if it was at home your GP will issue a certificate. Check when you can collect the
certificate. |
|
In some circumstances the
coroner has to be informed of a death and the hospital or your GP will tell you how to
obtain the certificate. |
| 2 |
The death must then be
registered by taking the death certificate to the local Registrar of Births Deaths and
Marriages. You may wish to obtain several copies as they are likely to be needed by the
DSS, banks, insurance companies etc. |
| 3 |
You also need an authority for
disposal of the body, which the Registrar will issue and for cremation the relevant
certificate. |
|
In Norwich, the Registrar of
Births Deaths and Marriages is at Churchman House, 71 Bethel Street, Norwich NR2 1NR tel
01603 767600. |
There are some other things you will need to consider:
| 1 |
You will need the services of an
undertaker. Allcock Family Funeral Services, Falcon House, City Road, Norwich NR1 2HD tel
01603 766996 are familiar with the requirements for Jewish funerals. |
| 2 |
The deceased will, hopefully,
have told you of his/her funeral preferences and/or will have lodged with the Burial
Committee information on those preferences. |
| 3 |
A member of the Burial Committee
will guide you through the details of organising the funeral and will assist with the
arrangements if required. Please do not hesitate to ask. |
