To All Liberal Judaism Leadership:

Dear Colleague,

You shall not stand idly by when your neighbour [is in danger]: Leviticus 19:16

I am aware that many Liberal Judaism synagogue members will have already responded to local and national appeals, but Nigel Cole (Chairperson) on behalf of the Liberal Judaism Officers, Rabbi Mark Goldsmith on behalf of the Rabbinic Conference and I thought it appropriate that Liberal Judaism as a movement ought make a particular effort in the face of such a global tragedy.

The Officers and the Conference have accordingly opened an emergency appeal fund and both bodies have donated £500, a start total of £1000, to get the appeal going.

The money is needed urgently, and, therefore, I am only able to give you some ten days or so for your members, or your community as a body, to respond.

I am asking you to contact as many members of your community as possible either at services tonight, tomorrow or next week or by e-mail, seeking donations made payable to Liberal Judaism.  Donations should be sent to me at the Montagu Centre, and the total monies will be passed on via the most appropriate channel on Thursday 11 January 2005.  Cheques with a full address on the reverse will enable Gift Aid to be added.

I trust this Liberal Judaism initiative will increase the total amount of money raised, and may persuade some Liberal Jews to give more than once.
