NEWSLETTER APRIL 2006 - NOTICEBOARD

Before we got there we thought that it would not be very good, but when we got there it was good. The activity day was held at Earlham Road Synagogue. Firstly there was a game that helped us to remember each others names. We were told a bit about Israel and us two were in agreement that we wanted to go there.

We split up into two groups: boys and girls. We had to make a tourist advert. The boys did Eilat and the girls did Jerusalem. After that we ate falafels and pita. I (Samuel) didn’t like the falafels but I (Joseph) did. We did some Israeli dancing after that, we liked the music played by Nick on an accordion.

At the end we wrote prayers which we put in the Wailing Wall that Becca and Andy had made in the corner of the room.

Thank you Becca and Andy for a fun day!

GENIZAH VISIT A visit to the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Research Unit, Cambridge Univiersity Library, Thursday, April 27th, 2006

The Genizah Collection is a window on the medieval world of the Mediterranean area. Its 140,000 manuscripts and manuscript fragments, mainly in Hebrew and Arabic, shed light on the mundane as well as the religious and cultural activities of that world

The visit proper will start at 2:30 pm and will last about two hours. Contact Joanna Cummin ( J.J.Cummin@uea.ac.uk) or Byron Simmonds (email bsimmonds@clara.co.uk) to register your interest.

BOOK REVIEW Samuel Morris’s review on the book called ‘Once’, written by Morris Gleitzman:

I have read ‘Once’ which is based on a true story about Morris’s grandfather and this is my review of it.

It is set in an orphanage in Poland 1942 and also in a ghetto. The boy runs away from the orphanage, gets picked up by a Nazi and finds himself in a ghetto.

The main characters are Felix, a boy that escapes from an orphanage to find his mum and dad and he is very positive even though he is in an awful situation. Zelda, a girl that Felix rescues from a burning house. Barney, a dentist in the ghetto and some children including Dodie, Ruth, Jacob, Henryk and Janek.

I liked this book because it was written as if the events were happening right in front of you. It shows what things were like in Poland in WW2 for Jewish and non-Jewish people. It is a very sad book but definitely worth reading.

I would give this book 5 out of 5 marks and recommend it to people over 9. ("Once" is published by Puffin Books, 2006)
