NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2007 JOAN GOODMAN MEMORIAL LECTUREOn Wednesday, December 5th, 2007 at the Synagogue, Earlham Road, Norwich, Professor Simon Goldhill gave the 2007 Joan Goodman Lecture. Professor Goldhill's talk, entitled "Jerusalem and the Cotsworlds: why does Jerusalem look the way it does?", was a show-stopping performance, both brilliant and entertaining. Those who had the privilege of being there will never look at Jerusalem the same way again!
*** Simon Goldhill is Professor of Greek at Cambridge University and Director of the Research Centre at King's. He has published widely on all aspects of Greek Literature and Culture. His books include 'Reading Greek Tragedy', 'The Poet's Voice', 'Foucault's Virginity', 'Who Needs Greek?', 'Love, Sex and Tragedy' and most recently the best-selling 'The Temple of Jerusalem'. His latest book, Jerusalem City of Longing (Harvard University Press 1 Jun 2008) can be pre-orderd from Amazon UK price £18.95 (hardcover) Joan Goodman, who was a member of both the Progressive Jewish Community of East Anglia and the Norwich Hebrew Congregation, died in 2000. She always encouraged friendship between the two communities. In her memory, her cousin, Simon Goodman, established this annual memorial lecture, jointly organized by the two congregations.
