ENGAGING WITH JUDAISM

25 January (Fri) 7.30 pm Engaging with Judaism at the home of Michele Paton. Check with Michele email michele.paton@gmail.com for directions. Topic: The Books of the Prophets – Historical Background.

Rachel Benjamin writes: The biblical books of the prophets begin with Joshua, and the conquest of Canaan (late 13th century BCE), and end with the prophet Malachi. Though there are very few historical details in the book of Malachi, there are one or two clues as to its dating (which we will talk about), pointing to a post-exilic, early Persian date, some time after the reestablishment of the Temple in 515 BCE and before Nehemiah came to Jerusalem in 445 BCE. The history of that period is fascinating, and very useful for an understanding of the biblical prophets. In our session, we’ll do a timeline, placing the characters and events in their historical context.
