Dual-faith service honours victims of Nazis

The millions of people who were persecuted and murdered under the Nazi regime during the second world war were remembered during a dual-faith service in Norwich yesterday. Prayers in English and Hebrew were read at the Holocaust Memorial Day service at St Peter Mancroft Church as the Jewish and Christian communities joined to reflect on the past.

The event marked the 63rd anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and, for the first time, included representatives from other groups who suffered. -Readings were given on behalf of Freemasons and gipsies, while Canon Michael Stagg, chairman of the local branch of the Council of Christians and Jews, lit candles of remembrance on their behalf and for Jehovah's Witnesses, gays and lesbians and the mentally and physically disabled. He lit the final candle for the six million Jews who perished.

Alex Bennett, the minister of the Hebrew congregation, said the day of remembrance was not just for members of the Jewish community but for all mankind and that this year's theme of "imagine, remember, reflect and react" was a call to action to help create a better future.

Among those present at the service were members of the Royal British Legion, Lord Mayor of Norwich Roy Blower, representatives from the police, including Chief Constable Ian McPherson, and Norfolk County Council chairman Michael Carttiss.
