FOOD POLICY AT COMMUNAL EVENTS
The PJCEA Council notes that while there has
rarely been any problem with food at communal events we have never actually formulated a
food policy.
While we can make specific requests regarding
contributions to an "official" PJCEA communal event, we can only advise
individuals organising their own events to which community members may be invited.
Nonetheless, it is felt right that such advices should be made, in particular on those
occasions when the Rabbi is seen to represent the community.
The policy, therefore, is that while we do
not seek to adhere strictly to Kashrut, our aim is to avoid giving any offence to those
who might wish so to do. At PJCEA communal events where there is food, sufficient
vegetarian options should be made available, meat products should be identifiable and,
specifically, pork, pork products and shellfish should be avoided. It should be possible
to avoid eating cream with, before or after a dish containing meat. At the communal
Passover Seder bread, yeast and other raising agents should be avoided.
