At its meeting on Thursday, October 5th PJC Council
resolved to adopt New Routes as the communities local charity.
New Routes works under the aegis of the Interface Learning
Association, a small voluntary organisation based in Norwich. Central to ILA is the belief
that greater diversity makes for a richer community, and that the integration and
empowerment of marginalised people is key to community cohesion.
New Routes has developed a number of activities for asylum
seekers, refugees and other members of new communities in the City.
- Works with asylum seekers to identify their skills and
areas of interest
- Matches these abilities with local volunteering
opportunities
- Builds confidence by supporting both the volunteer and the
host organisation
- Provides awareness training for participating organisations
and groups
- Facilitates a mentoring or befriending scheme in the host
community
Please bring something for New Routes. The box is located
in the Peill Room. Ask Beverly Simmonds for details. Alternatively, you may wish to give
money. Place cash or a cheque payable to the PJCEA in an envelope marked "New
Routes" and hand it to any member of the Council at the service.
New Routes offers pathways to voluntary work and training
that build on the skills, experience and interests of local asylum seekers and refugees.
Norwich asylum seekers are often highly skilled
professionals in their home countries. Many have run their own businesses; worked as
teachers, hairdressers, lecturers, accountants and journalists. Volunteering helps new
arrivals to regain their confidence and is a route to integration into the local
community.
New routes is a link organisation connecting asylum
seekers and refugees with local business and community groups. |
