LIBERAL JUDAISM FOR EAST ANGLIA
Our rabbi usually visits us for one weekend a month, when s/he officiates at a service, as well as conducting a childrens cheder and running an adult education group. Teaching for teenagers and proselytes is at present arranged individually. In between these service weekends we offer a variety of events, such as Shabbat lunches with an educational input, social evenings and book club meetings. Each year we hold Hanukkah and Purim parties, a summer garden party, and a communal Seder for Passover. We celebrate the major festivals, with special arrangements for the High Holy Days. We also offer religious ceremonies for weddings, funerals, baby blessings, Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Kabbalat Torah. Members receive a monthly newsletter. The PJCEA seeks to maintain good relations with the orthodox Norwich Hebrew Congregation, arranging joint activities from time to time. *** Liberal Judaism is the growing edge of Judaism. It reverences Jewish tradition, and seeks to preserve all that is good in the Judaism of the past. But it lives in the present. It desires that Judaism shall he an active force for good in the lives of Jewish individuals, families and communities today, and that it shall make its contribution to the betterment of human society. It confronts unflinchingly the challenges of our time, welcomes gladly all advances in human knowledge, and responds constructively to changing circumstances. It values truth above tradition, sincerity above conformity, and human needs above legal technicalities. It is unafraid to engage in dialogue with other streams of Judaism, or with other religions, or with secularism. It is always ready to reconsider, modify and innovate. It is the Judaism of the past in process of becoming the Judaism of the future. |
